Author and Character Interviews with Meeting With The Muse

This week I am so excited to announce that both my Author Interview and my Character Interviews were published on Meeting With The Muse. I had so much fun being interviewed by Kelly Blanchard. I was so nervous for my very first ever interview but Kelly calmed me down and after a while, I was able to relax.

Kelly takes an interesting and very creative approach to her interviews. They read like little stories. I highly recommend you go and check them out.
You can find Kelly here:

Book Review for Tidewater by Libbie Hawker

I read this book a few months ago but I so thoroughly enjoyed it, I want to post my review here. This is a must read, for sure!

Libbie Hawker is now one of my most favorite authors.

Review for Tidewater

Libbie Hawker

This haunting tale of the life of Pocahontas will stay with you for a long time to come.

Tidewater is skillfully written and expertly researched. Hawker is a master at gently weaving beautiful prose into an elaborate, sweeping tapestry of a compelling story. You, as the reader, are transported to 17th century Virginia and you get to immerse yourself into the rich, bold lives of Pocahontas and her family and the hard choices that she ultimately has to make.

Libbie Hawker is one of those writers that can capture you from the first few words of a book and hold your attention and loyalty until the end…then you desperately go looking for her next book to read. Her prose is so lyrical and poetic, her words almost read themselves, giving you bright, deep worlds that you luxuriate to live in for a while.

I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves an exceptional story. Especially a story with a strong female character.

Book Review for The Den of Wolves

I just finished Juliet Marillier’s Den of Wolves.  I have been a huge fan of Marillier’s for a while now.  I just love her style of writing and re-telling of Celtic myths.  She has such a natural flow to her stories and they truly are a treasure to read.  Here is my review and a link to buy her book.

Book Review for Den of Wolves by Juliet Marillier

An exceptionally well-written, spell-binding journey through myth and fairy tales

Den of Wolves is the third (and last?) in Juliet Marillier’s Blackthorn and Grim series.  The first two books are Dreamers Pool and Tower of Thorns.

Like all Marillier’s books, Den of Wolves is exceptionally well written, evocative, and has an interesting story that pulls you in.  In this book, Blackthorn and Grim help a young girl who has some strange abilities and a tedious home life.  Together, they help this girl gain self-confidence and discover things about herself and her past that change her life forever.  Things also change for Blackthorn and Grim!

The story arc finally comes to an end in this third book of the series but the end of the story leaves tantalizing openings for much more to happen in Blackthorn and Grim’s world.  I, for one, hope Marillier continues to write more in this great series.

If you haven’t given Juliet Marillier a try I highly recommend starting today!  You won’t be disappointed.  If you love Irish myths, retold tales, or anything Celtic, you must read Juliet Marillier and you will be an instant fan!

Q & A With The Author, Melissa E. Beckwith:

Q: Your writing is very descriptive and flowing. Who were some authors that inspired your work?
A: There have been many throughout the years, to be sure. It was after reading Diana Gabaldon and her Outlander series that I really started to get serious about writing. Then I discovered my love for fantasy and started to read everything from Robin Hobb and Jennifer Roberson. I’m also captivated by Juliet Marillier, Katherine Hurley, Jeff Wheeler and George R. R. Martin, of course.  Historical fantasy is also another genre that I love, especially writers like Naomi Novik and Libbie Hawker.

Q: How long did it take you to write The Empress of Ventra?
A: Well, the idea for the Sword of Rhiannon series has been rolling around in my head for probably twenty years. Then I studied the craft of writing for many years. So the writing, editing and learning process has been going on over the last sixteen years, I’d say.

Q: What kind of readers do you think your book will appeal to?
A: I think anyone that loves a good epic fantasy story with some romance, sword and sorcery, myth and legends and fairy tale stuff with some time travel thrown in will love The Empress of Ventra.

Q: What is the name of the next book in the series and when will that be out?
A: The next book in the series is called “The War of the Gypsy” and it will be out in February of 2017.

Q: Where can people find you on the internet?
A: People can go to MelissaEBeckwith.com and find out more about me and my books and even sign up for my email list to receive exclusive offers and free books. I’m also on Twitter @M_E_Beckwith, on Facebook @AuthorMelissaEBeckwith, and Melissa E Beckwith on Goodreads. Come find me!

A familiar smell started to fill the air. Rhiannon stopped and closed her eyes tight. The smell of earth and roots and blood wafted across the opening. She opened her eyes and stared at what lay before her: her nightmares realized. The huge tree began to whisper. It was such a faint hum that she was not certain it was there at all. Slowly it became more evident. As if her dreams had been mere rehearsals, her body answered to the call of the tree as it had hundreds of times before.

Slowly she stood before the tree, her eyes were wide, and she began to tremble. She felt Zellan’s hot breath on her shoulder and without looking away, reached behind, grabbing tightly onto the reigns in a desperate attempt to deny the call she was forced to answer. The stallion proved to be an unwise choice for an anchor for he moved with her, almost pushing her, as they were drawn closer.

The twisted trunk sat in its place as if to mock her and an amber glow started to burn within the tree. The light grew brighter, and a golden mist crawled across the muddy forest floor. Luna pinned her ears back and growled, long, sharp fangs framing a feral smile.

The tree began to burn brighter, and she became afraid, but could not move away. Curiosity bade her stay as a familiar feeling sprinkled her soul like an old childhood memory now long forgotten. A heady, dull scent hung in the damp mountain air becoming overpowering as it coated her skin and tongue.

Fear began to recede, replaced by a feeling that this was something she should know, like the words to a well-known song whose name she could not recall. An overwhelming urge to touch the light clawed through her being. Slowly she edged forward, ignoring all rational thought. Like the bitter cold wind calls the winter to come along, Rhiannon continued her path toward an intimate, well-known course.

As though lightning had struck again, she was blinded by a searing light, and a low rumble battered her ears. In an instant, thousands of memories of her life on a Montana cattle ranch exploded in her mind leaving a jumble of brightly colored images swimming within her. Time had stopped, and as each image grew old, she knew they were gone forever.

When all the images were gone, she quietly left that place and flew over the Earth. She was awestruck by its raw beauty and perfectly round shape. As it, too, faded from sight, she drifted farther and farther away into a darkness that could not be explained. She felt as though she were being pulled towards something. A place she could not resist, nor did she wish to.

Onward it drew her into its bosom. And then she saw her: the woman who danced in her dreams. The woman she was convinced was the image of her long dead mother. “You’re almost home, my love,” the woman whispered, and then her world went black.
